Adding to the discussion of wild berries and their ripening times: in
late autumn in cold temperate North American climates (I live in eastern
Ontario, near Ottawa) you can harvest wild cranberries, both
ground-level and highbush, and of course wild grapes, which are
*everywhere*.

At the other end of berry-harvesting season, we have wild strawberries
in late May. And as nobody else has yet mentioned wild gooseberries and
currants, I thought I should --- they're available in June-July.

Remember also that many of the berries that have been mentioned are
easily dried for winter consumption (blueberries, currants and
cranberries come immeditately to mind), and this is a common practice
among people living a more traditional life in a cold climate.
