Yes, you must press enter first before entering text. I believe this is new
to JFW 5.

When I go to Google, I hit enter and then type in the search field.

Are you pressing enter before entering text?
I can't remember if Jaws 4.0 had the forms mode implemented yet.
You have to be in forms mode before typing anything.
