This is so true. Before buying my scanner, I checked with the Open Book
folks who provided me with a list of recommended scanners compatible with
Open book. some of these were discontinued, but I chose a model that was
the next release of one on the list. The model I purchased was being
successfully used by a couple of end users with the product that I met on
the Open Book mailing list. Kurzweil may also have such a list of
scanners. They do have a mailing list for the k1000.

Just to add to Kelly's comments on scanners - I bought a new model
Hewitt-Packard scanner before deciding to get Open Book software. While
H-P
has long been standard for use by the blind the newest models do not work
with Open Book (or, I have been told, with Kurtzwell.) I've switched to
an
Epson scanner. It might be a good idea to check with the software
company
to make sure the software you plan to use will work with the scanner you
select before making the purchase.
