HI, Keep that Windows Update program around, at least as long as MicroSoft
is still supporting the version of Windows for which it applies.

In the case of Windows 98 Second Edition, official support from MicroSoft is
currently scheduled to run through January, 2003 and you will need to have
that update program in order to acquire and install any updates, bug fixes,
service packs, or patches that MicroSoft might make available between now
and then. Since they have already ended support for Windows 95, all
versions, they will probably never provide any future updates, patches, or
fixes for Windows 95.

While removing update completely from your version of Windows might be
possible, it probably won't be easy, and you'd probably be best advised to
know exactly what you're doing and how to deal with any unexpected
consequences when you remove it. An easier approach might be, if it is
available, to just remove it from the desktop or to deactivate its group so
it can't bug you to update after updates are no longer being offered. In
the meantime, get all updates that may be available that may apply to your
particular hardware configuration, or to any specific third-party programs
you use.
