Blind man admits pulling off holdup

A blind Streamwood man admitted Monday that he robbed a Streamwood gas
station in March with help from a 16-year-old boy who guided him to
   the cash register.
Juan Dorado, 18, pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery in exchange for
a 5-year prison sentence. Prosecutors originally charged Dorado with
armed robbery but reduced the charge as part of the plea deal.
Dorado walked into Thornton's gas station, 2 N. Barrington Rd., at
1:30 a.m. March 5 and pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the
attendant, said Cook County Assistant State's Atty. Shelly Anderson.
Dorado later told police it was a BB gun. Streamwood police said the
attendant described the weapon as a short, sawed-off shotgun. No
   weapon was recovered.
Authorities said Dorado robbed the gas station with a Streamwood boy,
now 17, who guided him to the checkout and took $200 from the cash
register. Dorado received $90 for his part in the robbery, Anderson
said. The boy faces armed robbery charges in Juvenile Court.
Dorado was arrested after Streamwood Police Detective Garrick Yurgil
noticed that a surveillance tape from the gas station and a
description provided by the attendant matched Dorado, who had had
   previous contact with police.
Dorado confessed shortly after he was taken to the police station,
Deputy Chief Jim Gremo said. The detective "realized that the
description of white specks over the pupil, or cataracts, matched
   Dorado's appearance," Gremo said.
Gremo said the circumstances of the crime--a blind person committing a
robbery--were unusual. "We haven't had this type of thing in our
   jurisdiction before," he said.
Streamwood police said Dorado's arrest was also a break in a series of
armed robberies involving his brothers. Sam Dorado, 23, of Palatine,
pleaded guilty Aug. 14 to 15 counts of armed robbery for holdups in
   the suburbs and Chicago.
Fernando Dorado, 31, of Streamwood, has been charged with armed
robberies in Schaumburg and Elk Grove Village.
