gordon and all,
Java script is a programming language through which a program can
actually be sent to your computer from a web site or in some
emails.

In general it is not considered too dangerous from a web site,
but it is known as a hole for viruses when included in email.

You didn't say what email program you are using, but check the
settings in your email program and look for check boxes that
allow
"allowHTML executables"
and possibly also simply HTML its self in emails.

Uncheck these boxes and see if it helps.

What might be happening is that actual java script programs are
running and the results are inaccessible with your screen reader
setup so you can't deal with them.

In my old fashioned and entirely non humble opinion there is no
good reason for either HTML or Java script in emails at all, so
anybody who sends emails that way deserves to have them deleted
with out being read.

email should consist of text only in the message body, and if you
need to send something else it should be in an attachment whose
file name and content are clearly detailed in the message body.
This way the user retains the freedom to ignore nonsense which is
unwanted.

The freedom to be "creative" with email must be limited by the
recipients freedom to refuse.

sorry I can't give you more exact instructions
