Here's what I do, using Jaws.  Within the player, press alt t for the tools
menu and then quickly press up arrow one time; preferences dot dot dot will
be spoken.  Enter on that.  If you want to see what all the categories are
before proceeding, you can read them with the PC cursor by using up and down
arrows.  You are already in the general preferences category so can tab
through that dialog box in the usual manner but may hear other categories
read while you're tabbing.  To go to another category you'll need to route
your screen reader's mouse cursor to that category and click on it; it will
take you to that category's dialog box.  I think you can probably change
preferences in the usual manner although you may need to do it with the
mouse cursor as well.
