Hi,

I have mild spastic diplegic CP.  I took driver's training with a couple of
different places.  Both had dual wheels and brakes.  I also learned how to
drive using hand controls which helped a lot in gaining confidence in
driving.  I suggest that you look for a school that has worked with
handicapped people in your situation for safety and confidence training in
learning how to drive.

As for the wheelchair situation, there are several ways to go.  There are
lifts which go on the roof of the car. There are people who take apart their
chair wheels and put it all in the front seat.  It also depends on whether
you have a manual chair or an electric one.  In order to determine which
would be right for you, I suggest that you get an evaluation done with a
person who has training in helping people in your type of situation.  If
there is a place near you that does adaptations for cars for people with
disabilities, I suggest that you talk to them in getting help on being
accessed for your needs.

I would not continue to try driving in such unsafe conditions with your
father.  It is not the way to learn how to drive and it is illegal.  Put a
hold on lessons until you get someone who has been trained to teach people
with disabilities.  Both of you will feel that much safer and more confident.
