Even if St Johns U were to scan every list message for viruses, it might
only lessen but not eliminate the problem.  While there are instances in
which a message containing a virus is sent through a list and triggers off
messages from those who become infected, most infections with which I have
dealt have come from individuals who have written to others on the list
and gotten replies, thus populating their addressbooks with persons to
whom the virus could cause them to send messages if/when they got it.  So
banning lists is only a partial answer at best.
