If I remember correctly, I had to restart the computer and then got the
instruction to insert the authorization CD or type in the numbers from the
package.

To put my two cents in, I did not first put the authorization disk in. i
put the program cD in, installed the product, then activated by inserting
the authorization CD. This was for Windows xP home edition. No problems
whatever nor did i need to restart the computer at any time. I never got
the impression that the authorization CD should be inserted or that
activation should be done before installing the product.
