Cause it's a Unicode thing. And believe it or not, Macs do Unicode too. By going to your clunky Start menu thing down at the bottom of the page, you can eventually get to your Character Map system tool accessory program. By gazing upon it, one can eventually find that the degree symbol is constructed thus: ° I did this by copying it on this dang PC thing with an Intel inside that they make me use here at work. You can also drag it into the document. Along with lots of other characters hidden in your fonts. Special private characters and such....
