"Linoleum: A durable floor covering invented in England by Frederick
Walton in 1863 and made primarily of linseed oil and flax. The American
Linoleum Manufacturing Company of New York City began to market
domestically produced goods in 1875. Patterns were either printed or
inlaid; surface printing offered more variation but was not as durable
as inlaid designs. Linoleum in solid colors, jaspe and granite patterns
is still produced in Europe but no longer produced in America."
