Folks,
I was just discharged from the hospital after three days regulating an
insulin pump. At the dietitians request, I met with her a week before hand
to choose my menus while there. She was
Wonderful.......even prepared meals for the fourth day just in case I was
still there. She hand wrote out every menu. She went to the local health
food store and purchased bread, crackers and cookies. She even bought a new
toaster for me to use that she will keep for gluten-free requests only! She
really went out of her way.
The first two days were a total success. Everything was gluten-free and I
had the snacks at my bedside. The third day was not so good; They forgot my
breakfast which was only scrambled egg, jam and margarine as I had the toast
prepared myself. After I asked, I did receive the rest but quite late. Lunch
was a beautiful salad and fruit. Dinner arrived with three large pieces of
oven fried chicken! I explained the problem to the staff and one hour later
another dinner arrived. This time the chicken was breaded! Finally at 7:15
the night of my discharge I received a plain cold dry chicken breast,
asparagus and melon. I had eaten the small salad and mashed potatoes two
hours earlier. I got apologies from the staff. I was surprised with the
difficulties as I was in the dietitians office at 3:30 in the afternoon when
she called the cafeteria to remind them of the special gluten-free chicken.
SO.... You most always be on your toes checking things but the dietitian
could not have been more helpful!
