Several months ago, I distributed an article from the Chicago Tribune
stating that the commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services
Administration during the Clinton years, Fred Schroeder, who is blind,
filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Hadley School for the Blind
because they did not interview him for the position of school president
for which he applied.  Below is an excerpt from the Presidential Report
delivered at the 2002 annual convention of the National Federation of the
Blind in Louisville by NFB President marc Mower.

When Fred Schroeder, former Commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services
Administration, learned that a position to direct the Hadley School for
the Blind
was available he applied. Despite his extraordinary credentials, he was
not even offered an interview. Dr. Schroeder filed suit alleging that he
had been
the victim of discrimination on the basis of his blindness. Without
admitting any wrongdoing, the Hadley School for the Blind agreed to make
a donation
to the National Federation of the Blind National Organization of Parents
of Blind Children in exchange for dismissal of the suit. The amount of
the contribution is $20,000.
