When possible I am verifying that the Asian flours I like to buy are
really gluten free. So far I have checked several brands of
besan/chickpea/garbanzo bean flour and posted the ones that were
definitely gf to the list. I had checked with several US organizations
that inspect food plants all over Asia and was advised NOT to buy flour
from China (they have a reputation of products not being what the label
stated--examples I was given was whole rice contaminated with sand & a
can labeled as Mandarin Oranges actually contained shrimp). I have also
called several companies that sell Asian flours in the US and that have
US phone numbers to find out if their rice & tapioca flours are gf. (One
company said there would be cross contamination since they package rice
& wheat products in the same area. I don't have the company information
but think it is D&D ?? from California. This company only sells flour
mixes to make various foods such as tempura.)

Another company I contacted was Eastland Food Corp which sells tapioca &
rice flour under the Asian Best Brand. They faxed Thailand and verified
that the only flours in the plant are from rice & tapioca. So they are
made into flour and packaged in a plant with no gluten produced in that
plant. I can get a pound of this flour for $.50 to $.79 depending on
where I shop.

According to the company they distribute on the East Coast and as far
west as Wisconsin. In the Baltimore area this brand is available at 4
stores (I have only gone to Han Ah Reum where I bought this brand but
haven't always found it in stock):
1-Potung Trading 321 Park Avenue, 410-962-1510
2-Towson Oriental, 8424 Willow Oak RD, Parkville 410-665-8432
3-Thai Phillipine Oriental, 523 Gorshuch Ave. 410-243-6193
4-Han Ah Reum Asian Market, 800 Rolling RD, Catonsville 443-612-9020

POC: I talked with Pam and she is the one that knows about the gluten
free information. But if you call to see where you can buy this brand
ask the person that answers the phone & they will get you to the right
person.
