KAMPALA - Opposition forces yesterday welcomed the appointment of a government team to lead negotiations on the road map to political pluralism. President Yoweri Museveni yesterday announced the appointment of a 25-member team led by the National Political Commissar, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga.
The chairman of the Uganda People's Congress national organising committee, Mr Peter Walubiri, welcomed the initiative, but hoped that the government could be trusted.
"It has been a game of waiting. We shall wait to see what they put on the table," he said.
Chairman of the JEEMA party, Mr Mayanja Kibirige agreed. "I believe it is a welcome move if they have named a team."
Kiyonga unveiled the team to the press at his office at Development House. The team comprises 11 ministers, eight MPs, two district chairpersons, an official of the Uganda Human Rights Commission and a member of the East African Legislative Assembly.
"The team will now make formal contacts with the other stakeholders and take the initiative forward," Kiyonga said.
He hoped that the opposition would accept the team. "The quiet consultations that I have been carrying out on behalf of the Movement indicate that all stakeholders welcome this initiative," he said.
He added that the team that starts work in two weeks would be open to private negotiations with individual groups.
