<Audible gasp> DHA is very essential to the proper growth and development of
an infant's brain and its visual development.  So essential, in fact, that
for several years Europeans have supplemented infant formulas with it.  The
U.S. is very near to doing the same.  I believe one company may already be
producing DHA-enriched formula.  A breastfed infant gets DHA from its
mother, but I surmise that under- or improperly nourished mothers may not
have much to offer.
