Sorry to be slow summarizing. For any of you attending the Gluten Free
Living Conference coming up this coming weekend here are some suggestions I
received for celiac friendly places to eat. Apparently most of these are a
short cab ride away from the Westin Hotel. (Not really sure how close "short"
means since I have never been to Philadelphia - but these were recommended.)
Thanks especially to Jo Ann for her great help!
Tre Scalini - 1533 S. 11th Street 215 551-3870 is a real authentic Italian
restaurant in South Philadelphia. Reservations strongly
encouraged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BYO
Appetizers average $8.00, Salads $4.00 with entrees averaging $17.00. Some
of the veal specials will be over $20.00. They bring complimentary Bruschetta
before the meal which consists of a tomato and basil mixture on bread. If
you bring your own crackers or bread they are more than happy to bring out a
side portion of the topping. Suggested menu items from gf customers are:
Sautéed Mushrooms and Prosciutto Mussels with red sauce
Roast peppers with Mozzarella White beans and Shrimp
Sautéed Shrimp Figs with Prosciutto
Entrees
Fresh Fish - usually Sea Bass, Salmon Tuna or Trout
Chicken with Mushrooms and Onions
NY Strip Steak
Veal Chop with wild Mushrooms
Lamb with fresh Tomato and Olives
FIGS - Phone# 215 978-8440 2501 Meredith Street BYO
Mediterranean w/ dishes from Northern Africa, France, Italy and Spain.
Moderately priced with all entrees ranging from $12.50 to $19.00 and
appetizers from $2.75-$9.00 and salads averaging $5.00.
Appetizers:
Soups - not generally GF but highly recommended for your non-celiac GF
companions
Hummus-served with veggies, spicy olives & feta cheese...bring your own bread
Sis Kebab-a different one is served every day including: lamb, ground beef,
beef and chicken. It is served over a wonderful yogurt sauce.
Shrimp & Escargot with garlic butter- usually served with a puff pastry
topping but the chef modifies it for us by sautéing it with spinach.
Portobello Mushroom- with eggplant, roasted peppers and haloumi cheese, the
cheese is served grilled and it is wonderful
Entrees
Sesame Seed Crusted Tuna - prepared medium rare over garlic mashed potatoes
with a Moroccan green sauce
Char-Grilled Shrimp - served over a fragrant and wonderfully spiced rice.
Oven Roasted Sea Bass - comes with garlic mashed potatoes and a black olive
tapenade
Seared Duck Breast - over sweet mash with apple cider and fig flavors.
Roast Chicken - in a delicate butter sauce over mashed potatoes.
If you have room try the heavenly Chocolate Mousse for Dessert.
Pasion on 15th Street Latin American
This is apparently very pricey but worth it. Great gf rib appetizers and
they use a lot of corn meal - good for us.
The Palm - near the hotel, good, but also pricey.
Maggiano's - near the convention center Another list member had a very good
experience here!!
Here is a site to find a few more restaurants that have been reviewed.
