Following is the summary to my request for information about summer camps for
elementary-aged children with celiac disease and diabetes. Thanks so much for
all of the helpful responses. This listserve is comprised of truly kind and
thoughtful people!
The Gluten Intolerance Group® (GIG®) in Seattle has the oldest camp for
children with Celiac Disease (CD). It is a mainstream camp, meaning that it
is a Camp Fire Boys and Girls Camp (Camp Sealth on Vashon Island, WA) with
two special sessions for children with CD. CD children attend from all over
the US, and sometimes their hometown friends come with them to this camp.
For several years, CD children have attended the same sessions that those
with Diabetes attend. The gluten free meals mimic the main stream camp and
all foods for children with CD are approved by Cynthia Kupper, a Registered
Dietitian, former Diabetes Educator, and Executive Director of GIG®. The
gluten free meals (including variations for other food issues) are prepared
by Cynthia and GIG® volunteers in a separate kitchen.
To register for this camp, is best done by requesting the information from
GIG®. Payment goes to Camp Fire Boys and Girls, but when registration is done
through GIG®, there are additional forms that ask about additional food
problems, favorite foods, etc. If registration is done through Camp Fire Boys
and Girls and is marked with a child being gluten intolerant, they will send
the child's information to GIG®, then the additional forms need to be mailed
to the child.
Camp information should be available in early January and it does fill up
fast. You may watch GIG®'s website www.gluten.net for information or send in
your child's name and address to be on a direct mailing as soon as GIG®
receives camp information from Camp Sealth.

Bearskin Meadow Camp, run by the Diabetic Youth Foundation, is a camp for
kids with diabetes but they are equipped to feed kids that have celiac also.
Every summer more and more kids with celiac attend (as they are now
screening Type 1's). My daughter is 13 and has attended Bearskin for 8
years. The camp is in Kings Canyon National Park and is
wonderful. They have kids camp, teen camp and family camps.

There is going to be the first camp next summer for kids with both here in
CA. I talked to a dietician at Kaiser in SF who every year works at the
diabetes kids camp and he said next year they will do a celiac/diabetes kids
camp. He does not yet know the date. The dietician is:
