Hi,

I talked to Bob Anderson, VP for Wal-Mart this morning in the course of researching foods for our database. He confirmed what I was told when I called the company last week...that on the advice of their lawyers, Wal-Mart'
s and Sam's Club will not provide a list of gluten free products for their customers

Among other things, they're worried about being sued if information changes.

One thing that Mr. Anderson said really surprised me. He said that when someone calls Wal-Mart for information about whether something is gluten free - it ONLY applies to the Wal-Mart store where it was bought. The "same"
item may or may not be gluten free in a Wal-Mart store that's in a different state or in a different part of the country. That's because they all use different suppliers.

It was another reason why his company doesn't want to provide a
list - because it would be too difficult to track all the lists for all the
stores.

This news - that a brand that is gluten free in one Wal-mart store
might not be gluten free in another Wal-Mart store - really shocked
me. I wonder how many celiacs are aware of this? Does anyone
have any thoughts or ideas?

To me, this is one more good reason why we need to change the
labeling laws.

Best wishes,
Lani K. Thompson
