First, let me say that I'm running NAV 2002; my LiveUpdate is set to run
automatically and virus definitions are up to date; and my e-mail scanning
is on. In the past few weeks, NAV has alerted me to numerous viruses
received via e-mail, and I've taken the necessary steps to rid my machine
of these files. But now I'm confused: Recently, a message, purportedly
sent by Mark Senk, was sent to this list, which apparently contained the
Klez virus. My NAV did not detect the virus in this message, and so I
opened the message.  There were no attachments associated with the message;
rather, it consisted of garbage characters, much like you'd see when
opening a program file, perhaps. My NAV still seems to be scanning my mail
- at least I know it's definitely scanning my outgoing mail (I use Eudora
anyway, so none of you have to worry about viruses coming from me); so it
appears that the program hasn't been made inactive in any way; and it
appears that there are no viruses on my hard drive.

I guess I'm wondering whether viruses can be sent via e-mail without there
being any attachments. That message from Mark Senk did contain the Klez
virus, but why didn't my NAV detect it? And why all the garbage
characters? Do viruses always come as attachments?
Thanks.
Rachel
