Hello Emily and all,

If it is about mathematical function plots and graphs,
The vOICe Learning Edition software offers you several
inroads for sounding graphs, using pitch for height
and loudness for brightness in a left to right scan
of any graph. This free software is quite versatile,
supporting input from a PC camera, flatbed scanner,
screen display, image file or user-defined mathematical
function:

1. It contains a built-in auditory graphing calculator,
toggled on and off by pressing function key F8, where
you can - using your screen reader - enter your
mathematical function to be both plotted and sounded.
This is described in detail on the web page at the URL

   http://www.seeingwithsound.com/winmath.htm

2. With a webcam installed and connected, you can point
the camera to a graph in a book and have it turned into
a sound graph. This is described in detail at the URL

   http://www.seeingwithsound.com/prgraph.htm

3. With a TWAIN compliant flatbed scanner, you can
acquire and sound a printed graph by pressing function
key Control Q.

4. With active window sonification, you can sound
the graphical output of any third-party mathematics
application, such as Mathematica, Maple, Matlab, and
so on. Active window sonification is toggled by the
function key combination Alt F9.

5. You can import and sound an image file containing
a graph via the file requester by pressing Control O.
Many image formats are supported, including GIF, JPEG,
and BMP.

Depending on the foreground and background colors of
the graph, you may need to apply inverse video (function
key F5) or one of the built-in color filter functions.
If you have a tactile mouse, you can also use The vOICe
software in combination with the ifeelpixel software.

The vOICe software is available as a free download
for personal and academic use from the web page

   http://www.seeingwithsound.com/winvoice.htm

Note that The vOICe software works with arbitrary
visual input, not just graphs as used in mathematics.

Best regards,

Peter Meijer
