Didn't your friend's doctor do any sort of test before leaping to
conclusions? IBD has a decided physical feature--your GI tract, or parts
of it, become raw and ulcerated (because your immune system is attacking
those spots). If that doesn't show on x-ray or endoscopy, it probably is
not IBD. In fact, usually IBD is mistaken for appendicitis in the
beginning, not vice versa.
Not that I should be amazed at any mistakes a doctor can make. The
ignorance of the medical profession, and its willingness to ignore both
problems and solutions, is hard to appreciate unless you have a condition
(and there are many of them) that is labeled Terra Incognita on the
modern medical map.

As the lily among thorns is tinged with red and white, so the Community
of Israel is visited now with justice and now with mercy; as the lily
possesses thirteen leaves, so the Community of Israel is vouchsafed
thirteen categories of mercy which surround it on every side.--Zohar
