My guess is as follows.
If you see a graphic of common oil sources there are very few which are good
w-3 sources. This data of canola looks reasonable. So, people if you don't
like to add flax-oil or don't get it in good quality, what else is left?
I think you over the ocean can get it everywhere.
Over here I've never seen it in a shop.
The original fat sources in the cool climate of middle europe (north of
olivEs) were flax and hemp and pigs (all but flax only after agriculture
imported them).
