Amadeus, I'm sure you're much more familiar with the
geography of Europe than I am. But, are you taking
into account ALL of the land not suitable for humans
or agriculture? When I speak of millions of acres in
the American (USA) west, I am talking about land that
would *never* be used for habitation or traditional
agriculture.

No doubt, it would be a major undertaking to make this
massive an adjustment. Could it be done? Possibly, if
the population decreased somewhat.

Other options could include a 'new' version of ocean
based pastoralism.

The area I refered to in my 'story' is not even close
to the legendary American plains. It is, in fact, an
alpine region with 10,000 foot peaks. Cattle and sheep
do just fine grazing there. (Lot of deer, elk, moose
too).

Your choice, of course. But, what it comes down to (in
my opinion) is using whatever land is available for
its best purpose. I don't believe you are a big corn
eater. Therefore, I think you and I could compromise
on using that corn acreage for something else. Perhaps
raise a few pigs or goats for me, and some 'wilder'
veggies and grains for you, eh?

One of the dilemmas with raising corn is the
incredibly long growing season. I should know, I have
attempted corn in the past in my garden. It's
frustrating, especially in my climate. You get a few
ears of corn out of the bargain, knowing that you
could have raised 'tons' of short season veggies instead.
