Banjul (OBSERVER)
A press release made available to the Daily Observer has disclosed that about 1000 metric tons of bulgur wheat worth US$558,000 is expected to arrive in Banjul by May. This food donation by the US Government, specifically USAID's Office of Food for Peace, is said to be in response to requests from the Gambian Government and the World Food Programme (WFP) for emergency food assistance as a result of last year's inadequate rainfall.
The donors will also pay the shipping costs.
This food shipment, scheduled to arrive in May 2003, is part of the US Government's broader response to the regional food emergency in the western Sahel regions.
The US Government will distribute this shipment, which includes enough wheat to feed approximately 30,000 people for one month, through the WFP in The Gambia.
The release noted that this gesture represents the US Government's initial response to the expected food shortage in The Gambia. It also hinted of the possibility of providing a second shipment in the weeks ahead.
