"Is Kenyan Airways run by Africans or by the KLM/Northwest group?"
Kenya airways was run by Africans, pilots, stewardesses, mechanics, etc for
many years. They also hired people with the skills necessary to run the
airline, regardless of color. See history below. GA's problems are a result
of years of mismanagement not the fact that the employees are Africans.
Political appointees without the basic knowledge of the industry they head
have caused havoc in many countries on the continent. Ask a coffee farmer
in Kenya when they were last paid and they will tell you "last year in May."
The Kenya Coffee Board and Kenya Tea Board, once set prices worldwide. They
are now bankrupt.
The Executive Directors appointed to head these organizations, couldn't tell
the difference between an "a" and a "b". They used a finger print for a
signature. This is not a JOKE.
I called the original email a joke because the picture of passengers pushing
an airplane is deplorable. There are many untold events both good and bad
emanating from Africa. Sometimes you have to laugh to relieve the anger and
anguish. The GA situation is not a desolate case, it is a lesson on how NOT
to run an airline. Many airlines world wide survive from shared revenues
generated by partnerships. GA should follow the trend. And while on this
subject, someone should write a book - Airline Management 101: Case Study -
GA.

MAJOR MILESTONES AT A GLANCE ::
1977 (Feb)
Kenya Airways is established following the break up of the East African
Community and subsequent disbanding of the jointly-owned East African
Airways.
1986
The Government makes the first move towards privatization by publishing the
Sessional Paper No.1 of 1986 on 'Economic Management for Renewed Growth '.
The document for the first time, spelt out the Government's intention to
divest from corporations which could be run better by the private sector.
1991 (April)
A new board is appointed at Kenya Airways under the chairmanship of Mr.
Philip Ndegwa with a mandate to commercialise and prepare the airline for
privatisation.
1992 (April)
Speedwing Consulting recommends an overhaul of management and operations.
1992 (July)
A policy paper on Public Enterprise Reform and Privatisation sets out policy
objectives and gives high priority to the privatisation of Kenya Airways.
1993/94
Commercialisation process produces the first profits.
1994 (April)
International Finance Corporation (IFC), is appointed as advisor for the
transition process. A privatisation committee is also established.
1995 (May)
An IFC information memorandum is sent to154 airlines in search of a
'strategic partner' culminating in the eventual selection of KLM.
1995 (July)
Kenya Airways restructures its debts.
1995 (Dec)
Shareholders' Agreement and a Master Cooperation Agreement with KLM are
concluded.
1996 (Mar)
A Prospectus is issued and shares floated to the public.
1996 (June)
Trading in shares begins at the Nairobi Stock Exchange.

I think Ethiopian Airlines already had that title because it is run by
Africans (or at least was, I don't know about now). Is Kenyan Airways run
by Africans or by the KLM/Northwest group?
Curious to know.
