The discussion of calorie restriction raises the very interesting questions
of where and how quality of life intersects with longevity. We do not have
much discussion here of paleo/pleistocene longevity. I wonder if it is an
open question as to whether the paleo diet (consensus interp of this list)
would reflect the optimum diet for a high energy, exercise intensive
existence with optimum health for reproduction and provisioning of the
family unit/ band/ tribe. This may or may not be the best pan for
longevity. There are comments here now and then as to the wisdom and
knowledge of elders as an important evolutionary selection factor. Is the
choice between a brightly burning flame that flames out not long after prime
parenting duties and a dimmer but long lasting candle? I am acquainted
with some people in their 50's, 60's and 70's who seem to be beating the
odds: they have raised families and run and ski and play. None of them
seem to know much about paleo diet. I know others, also ignorant of the
paleo diet principles who old way beyond their chronological age. Does CR
require a substantial compromise on quality of life (if quality is defined
to include athleticism on the order of what we assume for paleo adults) in
favor of longevity?
