I would like to respond to the Subject post from Margareta Morrison, which
included comments from other list members. I decided perhaps the list members
needed to know what the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) has been doing on
advocacy work. I contacted Cynthia Kupper, Executive Director of GIG and she
provided me with the following.


In the latest Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) Newsletter (2nd Quarter of
2002), members see that GIG is working to impress upon the food industry the
need for clear labeling and education of all persons in the food service
industry. Change within the FDA, USDA and other regulatory agencies does not
happen fast, and is often strongly opposed by the food industry themselves
for various reasons. Persons who really want to make an impact could help to
support this type of work. As GIG has learned, advocacy work must follow some
basic principles and rules. We are always looking for persons willing to give
testimony if called upon, write letters and do other advocacy work. In order
to have an impact we, the celiac community, must Speak With One Voice
consistently and have the same message. Our plan of action must also be
professional. There are times when an emotional story or plea has the biggest
impact, while other times the best approach is much different.

What people with celiac disease are asking for (better labeling and
awareness) would involve advocacy on a national level. State and National
advocacy issues are generally very different issues.

If you are interested in helping with advocacy work, please let GIG know. You
can also learn more about being an effective advocate from Kay Holcombe, a
professional advocate in Washington, DC, at the GIG Annual Education
Conference in Winston-Salem, NC.

Cynthia has made several trips to Washington, DC to help further the advocacy
work that would benefit all persons with any food intolerances. I have posted
messages to the list (for GIG) asking for support in this effort. I want you
to know that there is work being done by GIG to help each of you.
