Many thanks to all those who responded to my query much earlier this summer.
Here is an overdue summary of responses:
>I just got back from D.C. a few weeks ago. I ate all my meals at the Park
>Hyatt hotel and had them make me box lunches. The chef who helped me is
>Mark Marrocco. I faxed him my dietary needs beforehand and he was
>absolutely wonderful! It was certainly the best eating experience I've had
>since my diagnosis, if not the best I've ver had. The meals are a little
>pricey, but it is well worth at least one meal there if it is in your
>budget. I have multiple food sensitivities in addition to celiac. Mark
>planned the meals for me and reviewed them with me before he prepared them.
>He also came out during dinner to ensure that I was enjoying it.
>
>I hope that this is helpful. Enjoy your trip.

>There is a Legal Seafood in Crystal City, and the surrounding area on 23rd
>Street has a number of restaurants to choose from. These include cuisines
>we have found easy to get a gf choice such as mexican, Vietnamese and thai.
>If you hop on the metro (still in arlington) and go to the Clarendon area
>there is a Fresh Fields supermarket. there are very good Vietnamese
>restaurants there; our favorite is Cafe Dalat, a very unassuming little
>place with great food...we have never found an item there we couldn't
>order,
>but double check with the waiter or cook. If language is a problem ask to
>speak with someone else, we have always found someone who could help us.
>Other choices include an excellent Mexican place in Ballston (also on
>Metro)
>called Rio Grande....great margaritas, tacos, grilled foods, ceviche, etc.

>The correct web site for DC is www.dcceliacs.com - it was changed earlier
>this spring. There is an updated
>restaurant list. We redid our survey earlier this year. There is also a
>listing for places to shop by area. Have a nice trip.

>Washington DC Celiac Support Group is
>www.dcceliacs.com <http://www.dcceliacs.com> .

>I assumed you would be at a hotel. The reason I asked is that I have
>been at two different hotels in Crystal City and contacted the
>restaurant managers at each with an emailed dietary restrictions list
>prior to my arrival and I was treated like royalty. They were very
>careful in the preparation of my food and I simply asked for the shift
>manager when I was dining at the hotel and the chef prepared the food. It
>worked well.

>I was in Northern Virginia in May and had a wonderful experience with Fresh
>Fields in Vienna. I was going to be visiting my sister and taking a trip
>with them to the mountains of western Virginia. I communicated with them
>by e-mail and they had the bread mix that I use and other items that I was
>interested in. They were wonderful--they have great carry-out prepared
>foods too.
>
>Fresh Fields (Whole Foods Company) has stores in Alexandria and Arlington
>along with Vienna. You may want to check a map and see how close the
>Alexandria and Arlington stores are to Crystal City. The URL is:
>http://www.wholefoods.com/company/virginia.html With any luck they may be
>close to a Metro stop. (Subway and busses in the DC area are great and
>dependable.)
>
>While there we ate out at Outback Steakhouse, Austin Grill, P.F.
>Changs--all were good experiences and all are in the Archives. Austin Grill
>is supposed to have a GF menu--I went to the one in Alexandria and they
>could not locate the GF menu, gut they did understand and were able to
>address the GF food questions. These restaurants have more than one
>location, so you may find one in Crystal City or close by.
***************************************************************************
>The Austin Grill is southwestern/mexican foods and there were items that
>did not contain meat.
>
>I hope one of the Fresh Fields is on the Metro or a bus--the busses are
>wonderful and dependable too. The one in Vienna is not on a Metro route.
