I'd stick with Cordain for the explanation.
Acid/base relation is what decides. Digesting protein generates acid,
digesting fruit or vegetables lowers the acid load.
High acid load munches calcium of bones away - osteoporosis.
It doesn't matter where the protein is from. Rice is the protein source
for many people.
But oriental people often are too poor to get sufficient of fruit and
vegetables. It's expensive. In India fruit is luxury for most people.
Fruit and vegetable is the (paleo) key.
