I have the following:

Premature Ovarian Failure diagnosed 1984

Primary Adrenal Insufficiency (addisons disease)diagnosed 1994

... and we began a trial of Synthroid March 13, 2004...to see if I felt
better in general...

About 75-80% of the time I do feel well, better than before replacement.
Then there are times when I know I am a bit low on thyroid. I KNOW it is not
the cortisol, because at those times I have upped my cortef slightly and see
no change at all. (the bit of extra gets into my system within 20 minutes,
and if it is what my body lacks, I feel a sudden rush of 'freshness' and
wellbeing... Amazing, really) anway, Sorting out my symptoms, I know the
'run over by a truck' feeling is low thyroid, not low cortisol...

QUESTION:

-When my Cortisol or mineralocorticoid replacements are on the low side,
even slightly, would T4 convert in a different way than it 'should'?

-When my Cortisol or min. levels are on the higher side, such as just after
I take them, does that affect T4, T3, reverse T3 as well, in the opposite
way?

[My endo told me once that if he were to check my T3 level, it would be
'off' because I take steroids. All he has ever checked is TSH and my free
T4. And asks me how I FEEL.]

you wrote,

<<Associated adrenal dysfunction-not enough hydrocortisone and thyroid
hormones don't work right much of the time; A problem with too much T4 being
converted to reverse T3 instead of T3.>>

(inevitably the question becomes--If this is true, why are ANY Addisons
patients on synthetic T4 at all, ever? Even for a trial to see how it
works?)

I am trying to find more information on the interaction between adrenal
insufficiency and hypothyroidism (taking replacement steroids and
replacement thyroid hormone. Ultimately the 'best bet' recommendations for
people like me.

regards

Holly Jagger
