Hi Everyone,
I have a friend who needs your help and advice. Below is her story and
her questions:
In 1970, she was diagnosed with Graves disease and had a thyroidectomy.
She has taken thyroid medication ever since that time. After being sick
with gastro symptoms for many years, in 1999, she was biopsy diagnosed
with celiac disease. Then, two years ago she was diagnosed with
osteopenia at age 50.
She has been taking a calcium supplement (microcrystalline
hydrocepatite) which was guaranteed to increase bone mass, increased her
intake of yogurt, eats leafy greens daily (collard greens, mustard
greens, etc.), began weight bearing exercise (3 fifty minute sessions
per week), and on alternating days does 45 minute sessions of brisk
walking and/or step aerobics. She also takes other vitamin supplements
and maintains a strict GF diet.
She recently had a follow up DEXA and found out that she has a marked
DECREASE in bone density in her hip and spine. She actually became 1/2
inch shorter in 2 years. She is now classified to have osteoporosis.
Her doctors would like her to take fosamax or actonel. She would prefer
not to take a prescription drug (especially one so new) because she is
very concerned about the long term side effects -- some of which are not
yet known. She also is using natural HRT -- not the traditional
prescriptions -- and has no symptoms at present.
She is interested in hearing from anyone who has had success using a
regimen of natural bone-building supplements --proven positive results.
(Please explain what you are taking and doing.)
She would be most appreciative of any help that you can give.
Thanks for your input -- you are the greatest!
