Dr. Wilkins of St. Pauls in Vancouver can sure be
recommended for giving a radioactive treatment as it was he
who totally killed my thyroid 20 years ago . But seriously
I am fortunate that he did totally destroy my thyroid
instead of partially destroying it which was where he was
aiming for. At least I am allowed a replacement because my
TSH climbs throught the roof. My daughter had hers only
partially killed and because her TSH was high end of
"normal" quote " it couldn't possibly be the reason she was
so tired, bloated, and irritable". After 8 years of that
she saw Dr. Derry and guess what, she feels great now with a
TSH of .1. She now sees a doc in Alberta in order to get
what she needs to feel well. No one in B.C. that she saw
would prescribe for her as her TSH was 5.5, one point below
top of so called normal range. She was even told by one
that he wouldn't prescribe for less than a TSH of 9 (the
reason being that his advisor , an endo in Vancouver,
wouldn't).
After 18 years of hypothyroidism (9 of them I would never
repeat) I was sent back to Dr. Wilkins ( Third in the line
of Specialists that year) and as he said I was mistakenly
see-sawed around on different dosages in order to keep my
TSH in line, that I all I really needed to do was stay on
125 mcgs of Synthroid daily for the rest of my life and I
would be fine. (pat pat). NOT! My TSH kept going up AND I
kept feeling worse. It also cost me about $1000. to hear
that.
He might BE the best we have, anyway he sure thinks so.
Know as much as you can because he doesn't know it all. In
fact I wouldn't recommend him.
I have Graves so have antibodies and that doesn't appear to
lower the Ferritin as my iron level is high so that I may
have to have some blood drained. Am trying to control it by
cutting back on red meat, etc (The only red meat I eat is
buffalo which is high in iron).

Phyllis
