Natural Immune-Enhancer Halts Tumor Growth, AACR Researchers Find
ALLENDALE, N.J., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- One of the most powerful -- and
popular -- natural supplements used by thousands to stimulate the immune
system can arrest tumor cell growth as well, according to a study released
today at the 92nd Annual American Academy of Cancer Research (AACR) meeting
in New Orleans, LA.
"This is the first time a natural Biological Response Modifier has been
shown to go beyond immune system enhancement, to actually have a direct and
devastating effect on tumor cells themselves," states lead researcher
Mamdooh Ghoneum, Ph.D. of Charles Drew University and U.C.L.A., Los Angeles,
CA.

MGN-3 is a patented, Japanese compound consisting of hydrolyzed rice bran
extracts modified by Shiitake mushroom enzymes. It has been studied in more
than a dozen clinical settings, including human trials. It has been shown to
dramatically increase the activity of key immune cells, including Natural
Killer (NK) dells, B-cells and T-cells, without toxicity. In fact, Dr.
Ghoneum presented his findings regarding one such study of 27 cancer
patients at the 87th Annual AACR meeting in Washington, DC in April, 1996.
In that study, basal NK cell activity was determined to be extremely low
(10.8-40%), and after only two weeks of treatment with MGN-3, increases in
activity levels were recorded between 100-385%. Further increases were
recorded at three and six month intervals.

In conclusion, our findings indicate that MGN-3 acts by not only enhancing
the activity of NK cells as previously reported, but also through a direct
action on tumor cell production of cytokines. The production of cytokines
such as IL- 10 by cancer cells to alter the activity of the immune system is
well known. Our findings indicate that the biological response modifier
MGN-3 can alter the production and secretion of cytokines such as IL- 10 and
IL- 12 by cancer cells such as MCF-7; and thereby the activity of the immune
system. Findings that treatment of cultures of MCF-7 cells with MGN-3 also
can arrest cell growth directly may reflect an alternate mechanism of
control of tumor cell growth.
