Steve,
Actually considering the noise level on planes, I'd approve of
wearing them if they work.

I'm sure you'dcatch on quickly if anything weird started to "go
down!"  <Pun definitely intended <G>

Many folks too often abuse ears with horid noises. they are much
too precious to lose.  I am always horrified to hear the racket
from peoples walkman earphones clear across a subway car.
