The LED indicators help determine if the cards are detecting network
activity. If there are no lights flashing, then there is a connection
problem or the card is bad. In your case, it seems that the problem is
in the software rather than hardware. The LEDs are likely lit and are no
help in troubleshooting this situation.

I am resubmitting this, as there were no replies, and I am asking if my
answers mean anything to anybody. Also, my Ethernet cards have LED
indicators for Link and Activity. Would indications from these LEDs help
solve the problem of why both computers not recognize the other? I would
have to run the computers without covers to see the indicators
illuminate.
