The UW's African Studies Program will hold its annual spring symposium in
conjunction with the Wisconsin Film Festival, on Friday, March 28th in the
Pyle Center (702 Langdon Street). Titled "Contemporary African Cinema," the
symposium will feature presentations and discussions by a variety of
African film directors and scholars of African cinema, including Manthia
Diawara, Mweze Ngangura, Kenneth Harrow, Moufida Tlatli, Aliko Songolo, and
Frank Ukadike. Several presentations will focus on new directions in
African cinema, including shifts in the relative importance of political
engagement and entertainment, the internationalization of African film
production, and the increasing attention paid in African cinema to African
communities in Europe and the Americas. Free and open to the public, the
symposium will run from 9:00-4:00.
