Are the computers connected to a hub or are you simply running a wire from
the back of one network card to the other?  For two computers you can run a
direct wire, but it needs to be a "crossover" cable and not a straight
through patch cable.  I'd suggest we get the physical layer issues nailed
down first then we can start to talk about protocols and addresses.
