Brian,
All you need is the Router, and 1 NIC for the 98 computer and one for the 1
NIC for
the 95 computer.
Now, if you didn't have the router and had 98 Second Edition, you could use
2 NICs in that machine and connect one NIC to the 95 computer, and the other
NIC to your Cable modem, to share with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).
I had the latter setup for a while using windows 2000, but found it
inconvienced my mother on her computer which I had networked to share my
cable modem, when ever I would upgrade my computer. I eventually went with
the router option, that way if my computer had to be down for servicing for
a day, she could still access the net. I'm thankful this time I had the
router setup...this last upgrade went a bit wrong, so my I'm having to use
her computer until my new CPU comes in.....trust me i won't even dare go
into the details on that one ;)
Your D-Link router should come with instructions, I know my Linksys 4 n 1(4
port switch /and 1 WAN port to Modem). Came with very detailed instructions
on setup.
Good Luck!
Patrick

Subject: [PCBUILD] Setting up a Home Network w/Router and @Home Service
> Good morning,
>
> I've decided to setup a home network. I currently have one (Win98)
computer hooked up to the internet via the @Home, cable service. And I just
purchased a D-Link 704 router so that my second, Win95 computer can access
the Internet, too. But I'm getting what I believe is conflicting
information. On the one hand I've read that I need two NICs in the Win98
machine, one in the Win95 and a router, and in other places just a NIC in
each PC with a router; I need MSs ICS setup on the Win98SE PC and in other
places I've read no such thing. So, needless to say, I'm confused. Since I
run DHCP on the Win98 PC (that has Internet access) it makes sense that I
set up the router the same way as it would now be doing the interacting with
my ISP (@Home). And wouldn't I d
> isable WINS, have my PCs obtain an IP address automatically (from the
router) and have no gateway listed, on both machines? All I want to do is
have both machines be able to access the Internet and also share drives,
files and printers. So, what am I missing here? Are there some recommended
websites that can help?
