In response to Krista's question, I offer the following.
Yes, Krista, DH is one manifestation of Celiac Disease. DH is
caused by ingestion of gluten. Most DH'ers have some gut
involvement, although possibly not overt symptoms.
"The treatment for Dermatitis Herpetiformis is a strict gluten-free
diet for life AND, for some patients, a drug called Dapsone. Response
to the medication can be dramatic (usualy 24 to 58 hours). The burning
is relieved
and the rash begins to disappear. After a time it may be possible to
discontinue the drug
to control the skin rash" only with the gluten-free diet.
-- Shelley Case, R.D., in "Gluten-Free Diet, A Comprehensive
Resource Guide.
Also, the brochure from CSA/USA on DH says essentially the same thing.
It seems to take longer for DH'ers than true celiacs to respond to the
GF diet
in terms of seeing improvements.
I hope your neighbor's husband will become more aware of the CD/DH
connection through you. The drug dapsone has some serious possible side
complications
and the person needs to have regular blood testing by the doctor to make
sure other organs are not affected. There are no complications on a GF
diet, only getting back to normal.
Sincerely,
Janet Y. Rinehart
