Gluten reactions can cause profound depression. The last time I had a
gluten accident, I was consumed with feelings of doom & a desire to die.
I wept for several days. Not fun. BUT, gluten is not the only food that
can cause a depressive reaction. In fact, my ear, nose & throat
specialist said depression can be a subtle symptom of any food allergy or
intolerance. Food allergy symptoms can also manifest in other mood &
brain symptoms such as rage, fog, confusion, even hallucinations in
extreme cases. That has been my experience exactly. Milk, for example,
causes feelings of rage & anger in my eldest son & me. My youngest son
gets super anxious & turns into a motor mouth when he consumes milk.

Wheat intolerance is one of the most common allergies/intolerances in the
western world. I believe that is one of the big reasons why low carb,
Atkins-type diets are so successful. These diets not only control blood
sugars & help people lose excess pounds, but they also promote a feeling
of well being because they restrict gluten.
