Just tonight I read a note from a celiac who had been very disappointed to
find that the Outback where she ate had no knowledge of gluten or
gluten-free food nor any GF menus, even though she knew of the existence of
such menus. The same thing happened to me, and this is how it ended:
When I went out to eat at a local Outback a week or so ago, I also already
knew that Outback has a GF menu but had been unable to print off a hard copy
of it because the original refused to "speak to" my own WP program.
When we arrived, I asked for the GF menu so that I could read it while we
were waiting. The young man I asked said he had worked there for 8 or 9
years and had never heard of such a thing. He even went back to ask the
manager. No go. Having eaten previously at several Outback's in other
states while we were traveling, i had a fairly good idea as to what I could
eat, so I was safe. However, when I got home, I wrote to the local general
manager to explain my problem. I also promised that if he would get in the
menus and teach his staff about GF food I would write a letter to the
Listserv giving the location of his Outback so that Atlanta Celiacs and
visitors to the city might know there is now a celiac-friendly Outback here.
Within a very few days, I received a very polite and friendly letter
apologizing for my experience, enclosing a chit for a $20.00 meal, and
expressing a promise that he would immediately procure some menus and
educate his staff about the gluten-free diet.
