I just had a total thyroidectomy. The size of my tumor was smaller than
expected - less than 1/4 inch. Consequently, because of this and since
there was no evidence of spreading, my doctor is recommending I DO NOT have
RAI.
RAI, Surgery, and Antithyroids are options for hyperthyroidsm. If the intent
is to exclude the risk of malignancy in the absence of hyperthyroid
condition, only surgery is considered. Total thyroidectomy leaves one with
no or very little thyroid tissue inadequate to supply the body's need;
hence, thyroid supplementation initiated once reserves are depleted.
