Nodules or Nodes can be found in both hyperthyroidism as well as
hypothyroidism.  One way an endocrinologist tells which type of nodule(s) you
have is with a Radioactive thyroid uptake test.  They give you a little
radioactive iodine pill the morning before.  You come back twenty-four hours
later and they check to see how much iodine your thyroid absorbed in that
period.

I had a cold nodule.  It took almost 45 minutes for them to get a picture of
my thyroid nodule  24 hours after I took the pill.  I am hypothyroid.  For
those that are hyperthyroid, it may take only a few minutes to get a picture
of the thyroid nodule(s).   For those who have more than one or mixed nodules
hot and cold it is best to have a ultrasound of the thyroid gland first to
make sure how many nodules there are before taking the radioactive uptake
test.  It is possible to have both hypothyroid nodules and hyperthyroid
nodules at the same time.
