Because the above paragraph is NOT about
thyroid health issues, it, technically, should
not be sent to the group - by anyone but me.
I think it's also meta-discussion (talking
about the discussion), which is also solely
the realm of the little old list owner (me). So,
if I gotta...
Current Virus Scare
There is currently a virus/worm that, when
it infects you, it "replies" to some or all of
your UNREAD mail. This means that, if an
infected person already had, or, during
infection, received a message with the
Subject:
Subject: URGENT Support Dr. Derry NOW, or else
AND IF the message was unread, then the
virus would possibly send itself out with
that same Subject: line, to some or all of the
addresses it can find anywhere on your
computer. [It hunts EVERYWHERE on your
computer for e-mail addresses to send itself
on to.]
This worm/virus thingie is not a national
security device, and it is caught and disabled
by popular virus protection programs, IF THE
VIRUS DEFINITIONS ARE UP TO DATE.
Because home users tend to fall out of
date on their virus definitions, home users
are being damaged more frequently in this
outbreak. England, Germany, and the USA
are hardest hit, so far.
Microsoft created a patch to fix this security
hole about eight months ago, but, again,
home users tend to fall out of date on their
security patches, and home users are being
damaged more frequently in this outbreak.
To discover which patches you don't have:

You are only in danger from this worm if you
use Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook
Express to read your e-mail.
I believe one or more of the 500+ Thyroid
members may have become infected.
Privacy Threat
The worm, among many other things, records
all the keystrokes on the infected computer
and then e-mails the record to one or more
remote computers. This means it can record
your passwords and credit cards numbers,
and then give your passwords and card
numbers to someone else who has none of
your best interests in mind.

PLEASE NOTE: No Danger From LISTSERV
LISTSERV intercepts this kind of thing. NOBODY
can get a virus from the LISTSERV robot clerk.
NOBODY can get a virus from the DAILY DIGEST.
NOBODY can get a virus mailed to them from the
LISTSERV, the Thyroid group address, or from
individual e-mail messages from the Thyroid
group address.
Infections cannot happen by way of the LISTSERV,
because the LISTSERV stops them and won't
re transmit them. [Don't ask how.]
Get Protection
Everyone on the Internet should have a good virus
protection program. Everyone should keep it up
to date. [I use the Symantec/Norton program, and
in all my years I've never been infected. The Norton
Corporate version ($$$) connects to headquarters
on a schedule (you set up) and keeps all virus
definitions up to date for you. Good design.]
I hope this helps (IHTH).

matter, please send them to me
