Sometimes the parathyroid glands can be damaged during thyroid surgery.
That can cause a 'low calcium tetany' involving bad muscle cramping. I
don't know if this is the cause in your husband's case. Other
possibilities include other electrolyte imbalances - like low levels of
potassium or magnesium in the bloodstream.
I would definitely seek out medical attention for this problem.
