Hope this helps, Skipper:
A conjugated hormone is one in which the hormone is linked to some other
molecule such as sulfates, acetates, carbohydrates (complex sugars). An
example is estrone linked to a sulfate (sulfur and oxygen), i.e. estrone
sulfate. Once in this linked or caged form the hormone is no longer active,
meaning that it cannot penetrate a cell, bind a hormone receptor, and carry
out its normal function at the gene level. Conjugated hormones are a
storage form of hormone. When taken orally the conjugated hormones are
broken down by the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract and the active
hormone is released into the circulation.
