Two and a half years ago I had a hemityhroidectomy and have, over the last
six months, started to experience strange symptoms - particularly pain on
swallowing on the side from which the thyroid was removed.

I had the same surgery 7 year ago.  I experienced none of your symptoms.  Go
get it checked.  Good luck!
