Two things that made me realize something was *wrong* were (1) my hair
got icky -- I always get compliments on my hair, unless...--
and (2) I was the only native under 65 wearing a coat in late winter on my
(Southern) university campus. Sensitivity to cold is a
classic symptom of being hypo.

I didn't test hypo for years after my initial diagnosis (of a goiter). I
didn't go on medication (now Levoxyl) until after being diagnosed
with my second goiter.

The second goiter was diagnosed as cancer following surgery. (I lost
several years of my life to thyroid problems through mis-
diagnosis.) The first goiter was removed and I was told everything was
fine, but, when I got the news about my thyroid cancer,
I was asked if I was told the first goiter may have been cancer: both
goiters were initially diagnosed as follicular adenomas. The
distinction between a follicular adenoma and follicular cancer has been --
I don't know what it is currently -- whether the mass
has broken through the thyroid capsule.
